Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan

This is a great little piece of advice. There are a couple of things that I want to go over with this simple quote. First off. Eat food. Seems easy enough but really it isn’t. Food isn’t just anything that is packaged in a grocery store it is real food, as in you can read all the ingredients on the ingredients list and you know what they are or even better there is hardly an ingredients list at all. “Artificial” is not real. Added is usually not real either. Even many “fat free” and “reduced” items are not real because they have removed or added so many things it is hardly food anymore.

“Not too much.” Portions are one of the biggest things in eating. Learning when you are actually hungry and when you are just munching because and learning how much is good for you and doesn’t make you feel overly full. Don’t eat just because it’s there! Don’t eat mindlessly! Eating is an enjoyable thing, or it can be if you are eating slowly and thinking about what you are eating and enjoying your food. Believe it or not food digests better that way.

“Mostly plants.” This is a good one especially because it says mostly not only. Your meals should be full of colorful foods, veggies, maybe some fruit and then some grains or starches of some kind with a side of meat and fat of some kind (i.e. oil or butter).

Speaking of starches a rice cooker is an amazing tool. Get one. Seriously. You won’t regret it. Rice (brown and wild especially) is an amazing and versatile side dish. Here’s how you can make sure that you don’t eat just boring sticky rice.

Don’t forget that food should be enjoyable!
